Understanding 423 and 430 Usenet Error Codes

When attempting to access an article through UsenetServer, you may encounter a 423 or 430 error message. These errors typically indicate that the requested article is no longer available on the UsenetServer network.

What Do These Error Codes Mean?

  • 423 No Such Article: The server acknowledges the group exists, but the article requested is not present.

  • 430 No Such Article: The article is not available on the server, even though the newsgroup is accessible.

These messages are often related to article retention limits or Indexer-related issues.

How Article Retention Affects Access

UsenetServer offers one of the highest article retention times available. However, if an article is older than the server's current retention limit, it will no longer be accessible.

For example, if an Indexer lists an article that was originally posted beyond the article retention window, the UsenetServer system will return a 423 or 430 error because the article has expired.

Why Indexers May List Expired Articles

Many Indexers maintain references to articles long after they’ve been removed from Usenet servers. As a result, you may encounter links that appear valid but lead to expired articles.

What You Can Do

To avoid these errors:

  • Use a current Indexer that regularly updates its listings.

  • Prioritize articles that fall within the article retention period provided by your Usenet provider.

  • If errors persist, consider adjusting your search parameters to locate newer articles.

Need Additional Help?

If you continue to see these error codes, contact UsenetServer support for further assistance. Please include the Message IDs of the articles in question. If you are downloading articles using NZBs, you can open the NZB file in a text editor and copy the Message IDs.
